Land of the Yankee Fork State Park

If you want to visit the ghost town along the Yankee Fork Road this is a good first stop, especially if you don't know much about early gold mining towns. We visited Custer, the Yankee Fork dredge, and Bayhorse in 2020 but skipped the state park because it was too late by the time we got there. It's possible to make a loop off of Hwy 75 to see ghost towns along the way but it's dirt and high clearance in the middle section so we went in and out at both ends of the loop.

The state park has a small museum  with a video, a trail to the Challis Bison Jump, and a dump station with fresh water. There's small entrance fee to park in the lot plus a small fee to visit the museum. Exhibits cover different mining techniques and daily life in mining towns.

The museum is accessible. The trail to a view of the buffalo jump is paved and accessible.

The parking lot is large enough for any RV. Park  44.47569, -114.21029

  1. I guess we missed this one, more's the pity -- it looks like a good museum to visit. We stopped at First Peoples Buffalo Jump St Pk near Great Falls, MT in 2011, and walked the trail. Amazing places, aren't they?

    1. Yes, jumps seem like a much better way to get buffalo meat than by shooting arrows from horseback
