Several large boondocking spots are located along the Yankee Fork of the Salmon River in between the Yankee Fork dredge and Custer ghost town. We visited on Friday so it was pretty busy but we found a good flat spot with a lot of room that we shared with several other campers.
A short road leads to a more secluded spot. Walk the road before driving down it. It has a few dips and may be muddy. There’s enough room in the clearing at the end to turn an RV around.
The boondocking areas are about 9 miles from Hwy 75. The first 3 miles are paved, the next six are gravel with some washboard. Boondocking 44.38116, -114.71626
Ah, cool. I'll be in that area in a week or two. It's good to know new camping spots.
ReplyDeleteYou'll probably want to do a little exploring. This is a fine spot but I'm sure there are better ones. Since we were there on a weekend we grabbed the first spot we found.
DeleteThat part of Idaho is a cool place to explore. Check the weather before you head out of the mountains and into the Salmon River canyon north of Stanley. It was really hot when we were there two week ago. (I'm way behind on posts)
I have this inaccurate picture in my mind that says the area between Salmon, Stanley, McCall and Coeur d'Alene is all inaccessible to vehicles, all Frank Church Wilderness. So it's good to be reminded there are perfectly good roads into that mysterious land.
DeleteThose inaccurate pictures make for interesting surprises. We're driving through South Dakota which I've always pictured as flat prairie but nope, there are rolling hills, wetlands everywhere,and acres upon acres of sunflowers.
