This is the last wall standing in a town that had over 5,000 residents in the spring of 1898. Dyea was at the foot of the Chilkoot Trail and had a very short life due to the railway built out of Skagway and the disastrous avalanche in April of 1898 which killed over 65 people and scared others away from the route. The national park service maintains the town site, the avalanche cemetery and the Chilkoot Trail.
Very little of this is accessible. The trail through the town site is uneven with many roots. The trail to the cemetery is surfaced with large gravel for short distance, then pine needles and packed dirt with a few roots – doable but hard. The cemetery is very uneven from tree roots.
Dyea is located about nine miles from Skagway. The road is paved part way then becomes gravel, narrow and winding with turnouts for passing oncoming traffic. It’s not recommended for large vehicles. The biggest problem is a one lane bridge with an eight ton weight limit and 11 foot 6 inch overhead clearance. We were fine with our small motorhome. Even if you can’t do the trails the views out and back on the road are beautiful. Dyea
