Alaska State Ferry from Skagway to Haines

007 copy
Taking the ferry between Skagway and Haines is a one hour, twenty mile hop. Driving is almost 400 miles and at the rate we go about 3 days. :D  It might even be cheaper to pay the ferry        fees rather than buying enough gas to drive 400 miles.

It isn’t necessary to buy tickets far in advance. We bought ours two days before our departure. Vehicles are charged by the foot and each person also pays a fare. Everyone must exit  their vehicles and stay on the upper decks until the ferry docks.

Make sure to let the workers loading the vehicles know if you need extra room for a lift. They will also park you close to a ramp that leads to the elevator. The ramp is very steep so use caution. There are several good spots in the front row of seats on the enclosed deck where a wheelchair fits. Unfortunately it rained all day and we missed some nice scenery. Ferry
