In 1878 Leadville mercantile store owner, Horace Tabor, grub staked two miners in exchange for a third of the profits if they should find any silver ore. Their lucky strike started Tabor on his way to becoming the “Silver King” of Colorado. He invested in other mines and bought the Matchless, spending his money freely but ending up penniless when the value of silver dropped in 1893. After his death in 1899 his widow, Baby Doe, having no other place to go, moved into a shed on the property of the Matchless Mine even though Horace had lost ownership to the mine years before.
The tour is above ground and covers the cabin, mine shaft and hoist house. It’s a small tour but the guides are very good and tell a interesting tale.
The cabin is accessible. The rest of the tour isn’t but can be done with a little help. A short, crushed stone path leads downhill to the mine shaft. There’s a short step into the hoist house and a step down once you’re inside.
