Oliver Nestus Freeman Round House Museum

Oliver Nestus Freeman, one generation removed from slavery, was educated at the Tuskegee Normal School in Alabama. After graduating he returned to his hometown of Wilson, NC. where he became known for his building skills especially his work with stone and brick. His talents can be seen in the foundations, chimneys, columns, and other architectural elements found in the buildings in East Wilson.
The museum consists of the round house which originally had three rooms, and a separate museum featuring displays on the history of East Wilson. The best part of visiting this site was talking with the friendly docents who grew up on local farms and were eager to share their stories.
The museum and round house are accessible.

The parking lot is small and the museum is on a dead-end street without a place to turn around. Small RVs will fit in the lot. It may be possible to park larger RVs on the surrounding side streets.  Museum  35.71678, -77.89972
