Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library & Museum

018
This is more an experience than a museum. The story of Lincoln’s life is told with dioramas featuring realistic full size figures and elaborately detailed scenes. Overall it’s very well done but lacking in substance. Both of us thought that the “Lying in State” scene was kind of creepy.

Visitors follow passageways through the two main exhibits from one scene to the next. The passageways can get crowded and hard to navigate through with a wheelchair especially after an audience leaves the theater show. Waiting for a short while until the people move on and visiting later in the day solves that problem. Everything is very accessible and the theater even has special sections on the floor so wheelchair visitors can feel the effects.

A parking garage is located north, in the next block, on the opposite side of the street. The garage also has a lot for buses and RVs – $5.00 a day. Pay at the booth at the garage exit on 5th Street. Museum

  3. This was one of my favorite museums, but I only had an hour to visit as I passed through back in May 2005. Although it was open, they were still working out the bugs back then as the theater was not functioning that day. Always swore I would return, and I am sure we will visit the first chance we have. --Dave

  4. Wow, you were one of the first visitors! I had no idea that it had been opened for so long. Everything still looks new.

We have to return too. There are so many other places to visit but we ran out of time.

    2. I've just been backlogged because of the time spent getting a new home and getting things ready for my lady to move in at long last. I've got chapters and chapters of backlogged stuff to post.

    3. Looking forward to see all you've been up to!

If you make it to Ohio when you travel east you'll love the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in Dayton.

  7. I'm so sorry about your father-in-law.

I'm a little behind on the blog posts. We're on our way to Pittsburgh (yearly doctor, dentist visits, etc.) so we're moving right along - made it all the way to Ohio. We didn't get to see much in Illinois. We'll be back someday!

Have a safe trip south. I think we're going to be freezing up here in the north for awhile. Our plans to always be in nice weather works about 60% of the time. :- D
