Flint Hills Discovery Center
The Flint Hills area is a narrow band of land running north and south through eastern Kansas. This is a rare ecosystem of relatively undisturbed tall grass prairie. The rocky land has never been plowed. Cattle have replaced buffalo and the grass is seasonally burnt by people instead of lightening strikes which keeps the scrub down and insures a healthy growth of native plants.
The short movie in the theater at the entry has great special effects with smoky fires, wind, and snow. The exhibits cover all of the insects, plants, birds and animals that depend on the tall grass prairie for survival. Man’s role, from the first Native Americans who lived in the hills to the cattle ranchers of today, is also explored with interesting and interactive displays.
The center is accessible. A small number of the interactive features are not accessible because they’re out of reach.
The parking lot is large enough for RVs. Center
