Almost 2 miles in total, this trail starts as hard packed crushed stone and dirt then becomes a boardwalk loop with a spur to an overlook of a small lake. There's also a spur on the packed dirt section that goes to another small lake.
The trail goes downhill for about 1000' before leveling out at the boardwalk. There are a few minor obstacles. Boards have been placed across the dirt section of the trail to stop erosion. They can be bypassed by going on the grass. We hit a muddy spot caused by sprinkler water. The boardwalk has a short section that has tilted. The boardwalk spur to the lake has a high railing that blocks the view. All in all, the trail is accessible however wheelchair users may need assistance for the return trip up the hill. The dirt spur to the lake is too narrow and uneven to be accessible.
Two historic buildings have been relocated to the trail entrance. The Barker Cabin, built around 1881, is the oldest original structure in the Federal Way area. The Denny Cabin, built in 1889 as a real estate office, features an unusual eye-catching design. Both cabins have interpretive signs.
The parking lot has an accessible space but the lot is too small for RVs. We parked in the Park and Ride lot on S 38th Street. 1/3 mile east of the wetlands. The sidewalk is in fair condition. Trail 47.28965, -122.32897
