Schafer is a small park created during the 1930s as part of state and federal programs to provide jobs for unemployed men. It has two campground loops, a dump station, picnic areas, and two miles of trails. The East Fork of the Satsop River runs along the north side of the campground and is known for good fishing for sea-run trout and salmon.
One of the campground loops is just a few years old with water and electric hookups in all but four tent sites; the other is an older campground with some electric and water hookup sites. We stayed in the older campground. Many of the sites are very close together. Amenities include tables, fire rings, grills, restrooms, and showers. There's also a free electric vehicle charging station in the day use area across Satsop Road from the campground. We camped with our daughter and son-in-law who have a cartop tent. Most campgrounds have a one-camping-unit-per-site rule, however, tents aren't counted as additional camping units. We weren't sure if their cartop tent would be considered a camping unit or a tent. They paid the $10.00 extra vehicle charge and the ranger who came around to check license plates didn't question us.
None of the sites in the older loop are considered accessible but many are usable. The parking pads are gravel. The new loop has four accessible sites. All of the sites are paved and level and the accessible sites have paving under the tables and fire rings
The River Loop Trail, accessed from the day use area makes a loop around the newer campground. It's part paved, part gravel, part dirt and accessible with assistance on steep sections. The Forest Loop Trail is dirt, narrow, hilly and not accessible. Campground 47.09768, -123.46675
