Jean Lafitte NHP Barataria Preserve

010
The Barataria Preserve protects 23,000 acres of Mississippi Delta wetlands. A short series of gravel and boardwalk trails start at the park visitor center. Another group of dirt and gravel trails start at the Education Complex. The visitor center has displays about the role of the Mississippi River in building delta land and how levees are contributing to the loss of land. Other exhibits cover human activity in the preserve and the plants and animals found in the preserve.

The gravel and boardwalk trails join together to form one continuous trail about two miles long or four miles out and back. The Visitor Center Trail and the Palmetto Trail are both boardwalk in good condition. The Bayou Coquille Trail is gravel, doable but rough, with boardwalk at the wet spots. The Marsh Overlook Trail has several sections with steps. The dirt trails aren’t accessible due to mud and rough conditions. The visitor center is accessible.

Long RV/bus spaces are located in the last section of the parking lots.  Preserve

  1. I absolutely love the boardwalks going thru swamps, when there are no mosquitos of course! Kind of spooky and exciting thinking of what could be there in the brush and water.

    1. I keep trying to capture that spooky look of the swamps - just can't do it!

The mosquito are gone for the winter but the weather has been so wonderfully warm and sunny. With all the lingering we're doing we'll probably have to do a mad dash to make it to the RTR in Jan. :-D.
