Rutherford Beach

We’ve always been a little worried about beach camping but since we were traveling along the Gulf Coast, it was time to give it a try! Free or almost free beach campsites dot the coast from Rutherford, Louisiana to the Texas/Mexico border. We were only going slightly west of Galveston but managed to camp at four different beaches along the way.

Rutherford Beach has suffered damage from recent hurricanes so the parking lot and shelter are gone. There are porta-potties and dumpsters but nothing else. Apparently conditions on the beach vary a lot. When we visited it was possible to drive about a mile east but the sand on either side of the packed sand beach road got softer the farther we went. Most people camped where the parking lot had been located or along the first section of beach road.

We camped in the first section about 75’ from the water with a nice window view. A breakwater keeps the waves down in this section. The entire beach at the high tide mark is covered with perfect little seashells - the kind that we hunt for but don’t often find on the Atlantic beaches.
The sand road was very hard packed and rolling was easy but this may not always be the case. Beach  29.75839, -93.12295

  1. Nice to camp on the beach, tho I'm surprised there's any beach left in that area! Hurricanes have not been kind to the Louisiana coast. Good to know the sand was hard-packed, but I'd be leery of beach camping -- afraid of getting stuck in the sand. Hope it was quiet camping at ?Rutherford Beach!

    1. Very quiet! We would definitely camp there again.

We saw a lot of blue traps on roofs when we drove through New Orleans but the area west of Rutherford Beach was almost wiped out. Most of the houses were gone and the ones left standing were damaged - many RVs and trailers parked on properties as temporary housing.
