Pedro Menéndez, on his mission to drive the French from Florida, sailed into this harbor in September of 1565 and founded the city of St. Augustine. Several shrines have been built on the site - the first in the early 1600s and the latest, which still stands, in 1915. The grounds include the Prince of Peace Church, a small museum, a 208’ high cross, a little chapel and paved walking trails through a beautiful park like setting with interpretive signs along the way.
The museum, chapel and gift shop are accessible. Most of the trails are paved and smooth. To avoid the steeply arched bridge, which leads to the cross, go through the gift shop.
The parking lot is large with several very long accessible spaces. RVs can also be parked lengthwise across the car spaces. Museum
