Conrad Rice Mill Tour

The Conrad Rice Mill, founded by P.A. Conrad in 1912, is the oldest rice mill in America. The Conrad family ran the mill until the sons retired in 1973. In 1975 Mike Davis bought the mill and the company now makes 43 Verified NON GMO, Wheat and Gluten Free and Star K kosher certified products.

.We found the tour a bit of a strange experience. The tour starts at the company store with a short slide show of Cajun history and the history of the mill, then moves on to a guided tour of the first floor of the mill. Nothing was running in the mill and it looks like nothing has run for quite a while. The machinery is dusty and battered causing us to wonder how the mill manages to pass food safety inspections. The tour ends in the store which is well stocked and clean

The store is accessible but the mill tour is not due to steps and no ramp.

The parking lot is large enough for RVs. Tour  29.99778, -91.8114

  1. That actually sounds a little creepy from your description. Does everyone who takes the tour make it out?

I'd hate to wind up as an ingredient in a non-GMO, kosher dog food or something.

    1. We were the only ones on the tour or in the store. I wonder what happened to everyone else? :-D

  2. I'd think that rice is processed after it's harvested and that only happens a couple of time a year. The rest of the time the mill would just sit there waiting.

    1. I think you're right. It makes a lot of sense because that's how it works with other crops. When the rice is harvested the mill is probably super clean and running a lot speed. Our tour guide could have dome a better job of explaining things. Our questions were answered with a minimal number of words.

  3. Your last photo does look like it could be the beginning shot of a horror movie! :-)
