If you’ve never been to a Mardi Gras parade this is a good chance to see the float decorations up close and learn about the various techniques used to assemble them. Admission ( expensive at $20.00 a person plus a $10.00 parking fee if you drive)) includes a short film and a guided tour of the warehouse. After the tour you’re free to wander around the warehouse, take pictures and stay as long as you’d like.
The studio has been building floats for parades since the 1940s. Every year the Mardi Gras krewes pick a new theme and the floats are redecorated. All of the old props are stored to be refurbished and reused so you can find almost anything in the colorful jumble. Even though the warehouse holds just a small part of Blaine Kern Studio’s creations everything is done at this site from building the float’s wooden structure to carving Styrofoam forms, covering the forms with papier-mâché and painting the final product.
The studio is accessible but getting to it from the parking lot is difficult. The lot is surfaced with large, loose gravel. A double set of train tracks with large gaps must be crossed.
