Travelers along the Oregon, California, and Mormon Trails on their way to South Pass and the Continental Divide used this rock as a guide. Since it rises 1000 feet above the plains they could see it for a couple of days as they approached it. From the vantage point of the interpretive site we couldn't make out the notch but there's another pull off about 3 miles west where it's possible to see the back view.
The site has a short, paved, accessible trail with interpretive signs.
