The overlook has interpretive signs about the important of Steamboat Lake and the wildlife refuge as a resting, nesting and feeding area for migrating waterfowl. Although it's not visible from the overlook the large Pathfinder Reservoir which has campgrounds and boat ramps is also located on the refuge.
The hard packed dirt and gravel trail is very short and accessible. An opening in the fence provides access to an unmaintained trail. The opening is too narrow and the terrain is too steep for wheelchairs.
