San Juan Skyway
This is a beautiful loop, passing by ranch and farmland, through mining towns reborn as tourist destinations and climbing over four passes that top the 10,000’ mark. It’s about 230 miles in total. We spent about a week exploring it but could have spent more time.
Road Conditions – mostly two lane in very good condition. The roads have many bends, the passes are steep and the scenery is spectacular. This is not a road for speeding from one place to the next. Many sections have sheer drop offs and no guard rails.
Camping - national forest campgrounds along the way and private campgrounds in the towns
Boondocking – since most of the land that the skyway travels through is national forest boondocking opportunities are numerous. Some of our boondocking spots were breathtakingly beautiful.
The one negative for wheelchair travelers is the level of accessibility in the tourist towns. Many of the old buildings, which house restaurants and stores, have steps at the entrances. On the other hand all of the overlooks are completely accessible with ramps and paved paths where necessary.
