In the 1970s, when this section of US 101 was upgraded to a four lane highway, portions of the old road were left in place and renamed SR 271. This portion parallels 101 for a little over a mile before dead ending in a turn around. A narrow gravel road continues for a short distance farther and then heads down to the river. This can not be navigated by most vehicles.
A pull off beside the turnaround makes a good overnight spot. It's probably not legal but the road is not used by many people so it's worth the chance. The first section of the road is in good condition but once past the houses watch for drops where the road has slumped and cracked.
