Potawatomi Zoo

IMG_2752

The zoo is nicely maintained and the animals all appear to be healthy and well cared for. A variety of animals are included with many cats and primates, small mammals, birds, reptiles, and a barnyard area.

There’s a slight uphill section right after the entrance and then the paths are almost flat. The style of the enclosures and fencing making viewing the animals very easy. The carousel and the train are accessible.

The zoo shares parking with a city park. The accessible parking spaces are long enough for a 30’ RV. RVs will also fit in the regular spaces if two are used.  Zoo  41.66902, -86.21782

  1. You are very close to where Marcia grew up in Gary...of course, if you visit Gary be sure to wear bullet proof vest. :)

    1. We're not going to Gary but we are on our way to Detroit. Might need the vests!

  2. My concern about most zoos is that the animals don't have enough room to move around freely. I hate to see, for instance, a big cat who's worn a perimeter path by pacing because its enclosure is too small. How about this one, think the critters had enough space?

    1. I'm conflicted about zoos. They do a lot of good, breeding and protecting endangered animals, but I hate seeing the animals in small enclosures or all alone when they are social animals.

All of the cats that we've seen in zoos pace no matter how large their enclosures are. That doesn't seem like it would be a natural behavior in the wild.

This zoo has pretty large enclosures and the animals looked pretty contented or at least as contented as they could be behind bars.
