Sam’s Throne is very popular for rock climbing and hiking to the scenic views along the bluffs. A small undeveloped campground features pull offs along the east side of a dirt road. The west side has a few sites under the trees. The only thing provided are two vault toilets.
We did not attempt the trails as they looked very rough. The campsites are packed dirt and fairly accessible. Watch for poison ivy!
The pull offs are large enough for small RVs. The campground road has a few humps and potholes that can be skirted. It ends in a large turn around. We drove from the south on Hwy 123 which has many curves but can still be easily driven with an RV. Continuing north along Hwy 123 to the little town of Mt Judea is much different though. The road is steeply downhill with hairpin bends. I can’t find any information about the road grades but we were in first gear which is unusual. Trucks are prohibited and there’s very little traffic. The grades... all I could find was the elevations. You lose a thousand feet in a touch over 2 miles going down.
ReplyDeleteI copied the route (google maps) from the campground (lat-long) to the town and used that url on http://www.gpsvisualizer.com/elevation to get the elevations (in feet).
Arkansas is a pretty state.
We've been enjoying our time here - prettier than we thought!
DeleteThanks for the numbers. I put them in a downgrade calculator and came up with an average of 10% so figuring the grade varys a bit the really steep parts were probably in the teens.
One of these days, we'll "do" Arkansas! I can see you're enjoying it.
ReplyDeleteIf you do get to Arkansas make sure to visit Sam's Throne. The reviews and photos of the trails are great. I think you guys would like the hiking opportunities.
DeleteDo a day trip or drive up from the south and back the same way. I think it would be hard to make the bends in an RV towing a car if driving north from the campground.
