Mud Island River Park River Walk
The River Walk is very unique, a concept that we’ve never seen on this scale before and quite a feat of engineering. It’s an exact model of the Lower Mississippi River complete with the flood plain, bends, sandbars and oxbow lakes. Water runs down four walls representing the flow of rivers from different areas of the US that drain into the Mississippi. Interpretive panels have snippets of natural and human history. The walk is 1/2 mile one way and covers 1000 miles of twists and turns of the river channel before empting into a large pond representing the Gulf of Mexico. A nice view of Memphis can be seen from this point.
Admission to the walk is free but the fee for parking is $6.00. Parking may be free in the gravel lot to the north of the entrance or the boat ramp parking lot. Free parking is also available at the visitor center in Memphis. From there it’s a short walk across the skybridge or you can take the monorail. A roundtrip monorail ride is $4.00 but if you’re planning on going to the museum get the museum package which is $10.00. The museum alone is $10.00 so the monorail ride is free with the package. We spent so much time on the walk that we had to skip the museum.
The river walk is accessible but the bridges that cross the model river are kind of steep.
The parking lot is large enough for any RV.
