In Idaho US 12 closely follows the Louis and Clark Trail and also the path used by the Nez Perce to access their hunting and gathering grounds. It travels along the Lochsa River through a narrow canyon. This is a beautiful drive but very isolated with few services and no phone signal for the most part. The trip from Kooskia, Idaho to Lolo, Montana is about 130 miles so check your gas gauge become starting.
The river and picnic areas can be accessed by numerous pull outs. Small, primitive, national forest campgrounds are strung along the road, close to the river. Most have a fee but Knife Edge, the one where we stayed, is free. Of the four sites, number two is the largest and has good access to the river.
None of the sites are designated as accessible but all are usable. The ground is hard packed so rolling is easy. The river can not be accessed with a wheelchair.
US 12 is two lane with many twists but large RVs can be safely driven along it. Knife Edge Campground has a couple of long pull through sites. The sites in some of the other campgrounds are short and narrow.

I found your site through the Free Campsites site. We are planning a trip along Hwy 12 en route to Glacier and I'm researching campgrounds/free sites to stay at. As a result I found your site with information. Thank you for posting it. We have a 35' fifth wheel, so if there are other campgrounds that you can share with us along this route, I would appreciate it. Thank you also for posting information on your accident. I commend you for living your life to the fullest. There are so many people with full physical abilities and they waste their lives. Take care!

DeleteI think that all of the campsites marked on the map that are on or close to US 12 are large enough for your fifth wheel.
