It seems like every road in Montana goes through beautiful scenery and Route 287 through Big Hole Valley is no exception. This is ranching country, little changed from the days when Native Americans hunted buffalo in the valley and William Clark used the valley trail on his return trip to St. Louis.
It’s sometimes called the "Valley of 10,000 Haystacks" for the mounds of native grasses that are flung into piles using a beaverslide. The beaverside, which was invented by a valley man in 1907, is still used on a few ranches. The overlook has interpretive signs about the valley, ranching and the beaverslide.
The short trail from the parking lot to the overlook is not accessible due to large, loose gravel.
The parking lot is large enough for RVs.
