The refuge has five units but only two of them are open for visitors. We visited the River S Unit which features a 4 mile auto tour route with a downloadable podcast guide and the Kiwa Trail, a 1.5 mile accessible loop trail. The road is gravel and in good condition. The trail is level with a hard packed dirt and gravel surface and a couple of boardwalk sections.
Summer is not an ideal time for viewing wildlife but we did spot the year round residents – herons, egrets and ducks plus several muskrats who were enjoying the vegetation along the trail.
RVs can be driven on the auto tour road. The walking trail parking lot is large enough for RVs.
