Selma Interpretive Center
If you’re traveling east stop at the interpretive center to pick up a brochure with information and a map for the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail. There’s also a film ( the same one that’s shown at the Lowndes Interpretive Center ) but most of the exhibits haven’t been completed so there’s not much to see. There’s so little that I forgot to take a photograph of the inside displays however the center is at the foot of the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma just to the left of the location pictured in the photo above. When the marchers started across the bridge on their way to Montgomery they didn’t know that they would be met on the other side by state troopers with clubs and tear gas. The violence that occurred was broadcast around the world , shocking everyone and embarrassing the US. The Voting Rights Act of 1965 was passed about four months later giving many people the chance to vote for the first time.
The center is accessible but there isn’t a parking lot. All parking along the main streets is diagonal , too short for even small RVs. Side streets have parallel spaces but you may have to travel a few blocks to find one. Curb cuts are pretty good. Center
