Cottonwood River Rest Area Dry Camp
There are many opportunities to boondock and dry camp in Northern British Columbia, along the Cassiar Highway. Because there are few services or campgrounds, staying over night is permitted at most of the rest areas and pull offs. The one pictured above appears to have been a small campground at one time but the bridge connecting the two sections which are on opposite sides of the stream has been washed away. The sections are accessed by paved roads on north and south ends of the new bridge on the main highway.
Where we camped is not really a site and RVs without a high ground clearance should not attempt to drive down the hill into this spot. The other two sites have large parking areas and picnic tables. The area on the other side of the stream is a big loop with tables along the water. Vegetation blocks the water view at most of the sites. The vault toilets are handicapped accessible but the short paved paths leading to them aren’t in very good condition.
The sites are large enough for any size RV. Signs request that you limit your stay to eight hours but since nobody even drove through while we were there longer stays should be possible. Cottonwood River rest area – about 30 miles north of Dease Lake.
