Jal Lake Park Campground

Jal, New Mexico, which depends on the oil industry for its survival, has been battered by the fluctuation of oil prices. Many of the houses are abandoned or in need of major repairs. The town has a grocery store and several gas stations but not much more. However, somewhere along the way, a very nice little park was built on the southern edge of town. The park has a small lake stocked with fish, a .5 mile paved walking trail, a playground, a basketball court, tennis courts, vault toilets, and, best of all, a RV park with water and electric hookups and a nearby dump station, all free for three days.

The campsites are lined up along one side of a parking lot so it’s not the most scenic place but it’s well maintained and very quiet. Occasionally odor from the water treatment plant wafts over the campground.

None of the sites are marked as accessible but all are useable although the tables may need to be moved a bit to make rolling on the pavement rather than the gravel possible. The walking trail is accessible.

The sites are about 35’ long and wide enough to fit a RV and a tow vehicle if you have to unhook.  Park    32.10115, -103.18802

  1. We tent camped in Jal, for a motorcycle rally about 25 years ago. Was not a pleasant experience in what we referred to the dust bowl. 1st time we ended up at a motel when camping!

    1. You'd like the park now - lots of trees and grass. The wind and dust can spoil any place though. We just had rain.cold and wind without the dust. :-D
