FR 9710 Boondocking

We wanted a good camping spot for the long 4th of July weekend and weren’t sure about this place because it’s just a half mile off of very busy US 97 but it was great.  FR 9710 is gravel and dusty so we made a right turn onto the first little dirt road  (marked as 9710-020 on Google maps)  and found a good pull off far enough away to avoid airborne dust. Over the entire weekend less than a dozen vehicles drove down 9710 and one jeep passed by on our forest road so it was a tranquil campsite although there was always a slight rumble of traffic noise.

This is a good place to stay if you want to visit the High Desert Museum and Volcano National Monument. Bend is 10 miles north but it becomes a 30 mile round trip because of a lack of exits. In this area Route 97 is four lane with exits and a barrier in the middle  however  there are right-hand turns on both side of the highway where there are no exits. FR 9710 can only be accessed from the northbound lanes. It’s not marked and is hard to spot. There isn’t a turning lane so it’s a little tricky to slow down enough to turn while traffic is traveling at 65 MPH.

This spot is large enough for most RVs.

    1. Definitely! The only drawback is that it's kind of a pain to get to the camping spot because of the barrier in the middle of US 97. That keeps traffic into the forest down though and you have your little car to travel back and forth which would make it easier.
