Ashcroft Ghost Town

nn
In the 1880s a rich silver lode was found in the hills above Ashcroft but the boom town that sprung up went bust just a few years later when it was discovered that the deposits were shallow. People left for Aspen. Some even took their houses with them, down the mountain roads, set on wheeled carts, and pulled by horses. The seven or eight buildings that are left are in pretty good condition. One has a few old items on display and informative signs on the walls. The walking path has signs with photographs and information.

The path is slightly loose fine sand and stone. It has a gradual uphill slope. Most wheelchair users will need to have some help.

The ten mile road from Aspen is paved but narrow and windy. The parking lot is large enough for any RV. This is a very popular biking road lacking any shoulders so be cautious.  Ashcroft
